Machu Picchu (UNESCO World Heritage)

Peru - UNESCO - Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu (“Old Peak” in Quechuan), was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1983. “The Lost City of the Incas”, as it is often referred to, got the recognition of being among the New Seven Wonders of the World announced by New Open World Corporation on July 7, 2007.

Situated in Peru, on a mountain crest above the Urubamba Valley, Machu Picchu is the greatest symbol of the Inca Empire. Since the city remained untouched from the Spanish at the time they conquered the Incas, it holds great significance as a cultural site and is also considered to be a sacred place.

Built in the classical style of the Inca Empire, the city encompasses polished dry-stone walls. The famous buildings of Machu Picchu include the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana and the Room of the Three Windows, which are located in the Sacred District of Machu Picchu, as termed by archaeolodgists. The Intihuatana is a large block made of limestone and used as a solar observatory and also for performing Inca ceremonies. Other major places of tourist attraction include the Fountain Caretaker’s House, Inca Bridge and Ceremonial Baths.

If you desire to witness an astonishing variety of flora and fauna, then a visit to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary is a must. For all the adventure enthusiasts, there can be nothing better than the experience of trekking up all the way to Huayna Picchu, meaning the “Young Peak”, that is a magical point rising over Machu Picchu. And if want more, then trek your way to Winay Wayna and the Inca Trail, which will leave you astounded.

Machu Picchu (UNESCO Welterbe)

Peru - UNESCO - Machu Picchu
