Budapest

Budapest is among the most popular tourist destinations as well as an important economic center of Central Europe. The river Danube flows gracefully through the city, dividing it into two parts, ‘Buda’ and ‘Pest’. This beautiful segregation has earned Budapest the nickname “The Pearl of Danube”.

Hungary - Budapest - Chain Bridge and Royal Palace

Budapest’s Castle District offers everything in one place. The Buda Castle and the Andrássy út Boulevard (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are the most famous and visited sights of Budapest. Along Budapest’s most glamorous boulevard, you can find many interesting attractions like museums, the State Opera House, theatres, squares, restaurants, shops and a whole lot more. The Royal Palaces are one of the symbols of the country. Other major destinations are Fisherman’s Bastion, where you can enjoy an amazing view over the entire city, the Holy Trinity Square, the old town hall, the House of Hungarian Wines and the Matthias Church.

One of the biggest festive attractions is the colorful annual summer festival held on every weekend from July till August. It takes place on ‘the Chain Bridge’ that runs across the river Danube. A walk along the Danube promenade offers wonderful views of the river and the Buda side with the Gellert and Castle Hills. While you walk along the river bank don’t miss one of the architectural gems, the art-nouveau Gresham Palace on Roosevelt Square at the Pest end of the Chain Bridge.

Also interesting is Jewish Budapest, its main attraction being the Great Synagogue, a huge Byzantine-Moorish style Synagogue. Another point of interest is the Imre Varga’s striking Memorial Tree sculpture, in front of the Heroes’ Temple, which has names of Jewish families murdered in Holocaust engraved on leaves.

Budapest has a temperate transitional climate with quite high daily fluctuations. Winters are relatively short, moderately cold and usually dry, and sometimes sunny, making it the best time to visit.
