Majorca (Mallorca)

The scenic island of Majorca is Spain’s largest island and is mainly known for its party scene, great architecture and gorgeous scenery. In 1950, the first charter flight landed at the airport of Palma, and ever since, Majorca has been the most popular of the Balearic Islands, especially among northern Europeans. A good infrastructure, delicious food, over 80 beaches and a vibrant night life have made many a tourist return to this beautiful island more than once.

Spain - Majorca

Most people take a direct flight from the European mainland to the airport of Palma de Majorca. The island’s capital city is where about half of Majorca’s inhabitants are at home. The great architecture, impressive gothic churches, beautiful tree-lined boulevards and bay-side cafés make Palma a great place to spend your vacation. Near the capital, you can find many beautiful beaches, such as the Playa de Palma, which is particularly popular among the younger crowds. Thanks to its location, Palma’s beaches are great spots for watching the famous sunsets. When in Palma, don’t miss visiting the impressive Belver Castle and the ancient Arab baths (Banyas Arabas). Other tourist attractions include the ancient talayotic ruins in Capocorbvell, as well as the famous old monastery near Valdemossa, where Chopin once lived with his lover George Sand.

Spain - MajorcaAlthough Majorca is well known for its party scene and wild nightlife, there are many quiet spots to relax: cute little villages and secluded beaches, all just waiting to be explored. Take the train from Palma to Sóller for some amazing scenic views. The picturesque village is popular for its art nouveau buildings and the 16th century Església Parroquial de San Bartolomé. It is also an ideal base for hiking or biking the many trails in the surrounding mountains. Another highlight are the caves ‘Coves del Drav’ near Portocristo, where you can witness an amazing music and light show among the stalactites and stalagmites. For more of the untamed wilderness and beautiful scenery, you should head to the north of the island, where there are fewer tourists. The Cap de Formentor is a haven for all bird lovers and hikers. If you’re looking for beautiful beaches, the south and south-east coasts are the perfect place to go. Among the nicest beaches and bays are the Cala Santanyi, Platja d’es Trenc, as well as the Cala Portals Vells.

Spain - MajorcaThe most popular time to travel is during the summer, when thousands of Europeans flock to Majorca. A better time to book cheap flights is during spring and fall, since temperatures range between mild and warm, and the beaches aren’t too crowded. During the winter months, from December to February, temperatures can drop to 10 ° C at night.
