Tokyo

Japan - Tokyo Tower

Tokyo is the capital and the most famous city of Japan, ‘the land of rising sun’. Besides being one of the world’s most important economic centres, it’s also a great tourist destination. The city offers varied attractions like fascinating temples and stunning monuments, as well as gigantic skyscrapers, interesting museums and lush, green parks.

Tokyo boasts many splendid landmarks and monuments like the fabulous Imperial Palace, Belfry (Benten-yama), the Hanazono Jinja shrine, Kaminarimon (Sensoji Temple), Asakusa Shrine, Meiji Jingu Shrine and the city’ iconic landmark, Tokyo Tower, which is taller than the Eiffel Tower. There are plenty of museums and galleries worth exploring, like the Edo-Tokyo Museum, the National Museum, the Sumo Museum, Asakura Sculpture Gallery, as well as the National Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Apart from being a concrete jungle filled with skyscrapers, Tokyo is also home to some incredibly beautiful parks and gardens. The most impressive ones are the Imperial Palace East Garden, the Hama Rikyu Garden, the Jindai Botanical Park and the Kiyosumi Garden. Great destinations for day-trips are the Izu Islands  which are located not far from the city, in the Bay of Tokyo. Also very popular among travelers are excursions to Mount Fuji, which at 3776 meters is the country’s tallest mountain.

Tokyo hosts a number of events and festivals like the popular Japanese Beer Festival, Gion Matsuri, the Samba Carnival and the Sanja Matsuri Festival. Other popular events held here include the Sumida River Fireworks Festival and the Japanese F1 Grand Prix. The most popular district for going out at night is Shinjuhu, located near the city center. Here you can find a large number of restaurants, shops, little eateries, as well as strip clubs and cocktail bars.

Other famous tourist attractions include the popular theme park ‘Disney Resort’, Hanayashiki Amusement Park and the Dome City. One can also enjoy playing golf at the Yomiuri Country Club or the Kazusa Monarch Country Club. If you want to shop for antiquities and souvenirs, the Hanae Mori Building and the Oriental Bazaar are the best.

Tokyo has a temperate climate, with high seasonal fluctuations. It has hot summers and cold winters with little snowfall. The milder weather during spring and fall make this the ideal time to visit.
