Bejing (Peking)

Beijing, also known as Peking, is the capital and one of the most popular cities in the People’s Republic of China. With so many well-known and unique attractions, Beijing enchants travelers from all over the world.

Beijing boasts many outstanding landmarks and monuments like the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City, which forms the center of Beijing. Other prominent attractions are the Great Hall of the People, Gulou & Zhonglou, the Mao Zedong Mausoleum, the Marco Polo Bridge and the Monument to the People’s Heroes. Tiananmen Square is known as the world’s largest public square and is of great historic significance. The gorgeous Summer Palace used to be the home of the Chinese Empire and his family during the incredibly hot summer months.

Beijing is home to some of the most beautiful religious sites in the country, like the Temple of Heaven, the Pagoda of Tianning, as well as the Temple and the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception. Other popular religious sites include the Temple of Earth, the Pagoda of Cishou and the Niujie Mosque, which is the oldest mosque in the city.

Explore the history, art and culture of Beijing in its fine museums and art galleries like the Great Wall Museum, the National Museum of China, the Natural History Museum, or the Palace Museum.

For nature lovers Beijing has many famous traditional Chinese gardens and parks including Beihai Park, the Botanical Garden, Zhongshan Park, as well as Jingshan Park. The latter is home to a beautiful Buddha temple and a hill, from where you can enjoy an awe striking view of the Forbidden City. For fun and leisure the best attraction is the ‘Beijing Amusement Park’, which is perfect for all ages.

Other places of interest include the China Science and Technology Museum, the Planetarium, the Old Beijing Observatory, and the Bird’s Nest stadium, which was constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Beijing has a continental climate with cold, windy and dry winters, as well as hot and humid summers. The best time to visit is during spring or autumn. Try to avoid July and August, as these are the hottest months with heavy spells of rain.
